A silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in width overall consisting of four silver demi-fleurs-de-lis issuing saltirewise from a silver annulet, overall a maroon Greek cross bearing a yellow broad arrow and with a silver five-pointed star resting on top of the upper arm all with a scarlet scroll, the upper ends terminating at the corners of the star, the lower half inscribed "SERVICE TO THE ARMY" in silver letters.
Maroon and white are the colors used for Medical organizations. The cross refers to the Hospital and its mission. The fleurs-de-lis symbolize service in France, Germany and Europe during World War II and the arrowhead refers to the assault landing in Normandy. The scarlet color of the scroll alludes to the Meritorious Unit Commendation awarded the organization and the white star refers to the State of Texas where the organization was originally activated. The circle represents perfection, completeness and continuity.
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 5 December 1969.
